The more efficient a society becomes at using an energy source, more of that energy source is ultimately used. If we all drove super efficient cars, more people would be able to own and operate them and more fuel would be used. Energy that we don’t use will be used by another country. When I studied biology and ecosystems (something like a pond or woodland habitat) it was said that the more efficient a system was the faster energy would flow through it; conversley the most ‘inefficient’ systems (with lots of feed back loops) preserved the energy within the system and were able to continue almost indefinately.
America is the most wastefull country on this planet,dont think this will apply to any one in our generation,we are all about oil and will go to war over it till its gone.

That has got to be the most twisted logic i have ever heard. Just because you use less coal and oil, dosent mean your gonna automatically divert the drive you had to more harmful things.
Lets not confuse this. Everyone should use 100% clean renewable energy on-top of learning how you could minimalise consumption. When we reach such a goal we could divert our time and drive to great things like turning ones property into a more sustainable living environment. This isnt complicated guys………
@socalcraigster You’re confusing the fact that our price system requires growth in energy consumption for the purposes of economic growth. M. King Hubbert verified this back in the 40’s. We can become a hell of a lot more efficient, but people wouldn’t be making money. We are using planned obsolescence of phones, cars, pretty much any household appliances small and large to keep the gravy train rolling. No matter the cost of future energy supplies, resources, or environment.
Here’s something to think about. If I have a car that is 1 1/2 times efficient than my regular car. When I use that car for whatever amount of time I use it for, I’m still using less consumption. lets even say I use the car even longer than I would have and match the energy I would use in the regular car. All I’m doing is trading that extra time that I could have used at home for my lights, AC, TV etc. and the energy I would use consuming those things for more driving with less energy.
Hate to break it to you but you are already in Jevons Paradox. Instead of reducing consumption, you have used techology (solar power, special light bulbs) to essentially maintain your life without big utlity bills.How much was the planet polluted by the development of these things?
India and China have populations that are six to seven times the US. Even if the US was as efficient and resourceful as possible, those two countries alone will still continue to polute the planet.
Jevons ‘paradox’ is dumb. It’s “analysis” is tied to price system bologna. No different than the morons who try to put a “price” on a jungle habitat. There are limits to how much an individual person can consume. Just because certain energy consuming devices may become efficient or people make efficient decisions such as mass transit doesn’t mean there will be more consumption. Again, this ‘paradox’ is tied to abstract ideas of money which make it bullshit. Dump the idea for your own good.
@caganb ake gas $40 a gallon and millions would starve due to crippled food production and distribution. Sadly, gas will make itself $40 before long. Hope everyone is ready to fall back to the industrial age.

You want to think about something scary. We are using oil and coal as fuel we do not use draft animals any more so the land that was used to feed the animals has gone into human food production. We have 3 times the people we had when I was a kid living in this country. When we do not have enough food for the population to eat there will flat not be enough. Now this can arise from a bug that will not die with pesticides or a seed a droute but some times maybe soon we will probably have a die off.
I suppose then it’s actually good that oil speculation is high now… wealthy capitalists profiting from artificial scarcity, are, perhaps unknowingly, pushing back a time for peak or perhaps slowing the decline.
…. or maybe they’re making the decline more abrupt and catastrophic, who knows.
Make gas $40 a gallon and it’s walking time.
I have a prius just cause we have an incredibly efficient car we don’t spend all our time on the road it still cost to power it we still need to do maintence. We went to Phoenix from 70769 but trips like that you either have the time to go or you dont if you have a job you almost never have the time to do this. On the local level we have always gone where we wanted at the drop of a hat no matter the ride. I have a scooter too I ride that every chance I can its a joy to ride it.
What’s the path we R on now Increased consumption brought on higher prices, higher price R likely to bring on conservation on the part of the consumer. Conservation is supposed to bring on increased consumption, that will bring on higher prices. We would be locked in a loop, I’m not prepared to give Jevons paradox too much credibility other than considering it.
