Merapi Volcano Blows As Predicted, Area Evacuated

<!–[CDATA[

Java’s Merapi volcano’s rising activity that was reported Monday, resulted in three eruptions early Tuesday, “spewing volcanic ash as high as 1.5 kilometers and searing heat clouds down the slopes”, according to local government volcanologist Surono. The authorities have evacuated local populations following the activity, especially after the first eruption this morning. Volcanologists had predicted the Merapi eruption would be larger than that of 2006, and they were correct, as the heat clouds, gas and ash created by the eruptions are longer lasting and wider spread than the 7-minute eruption of 2006.]]>
